Industry insights from DEV Conference 2026

The enamel industry is evolving rapidly, shaped by technological innovation, regulatory change, and shifting global manufacturing dynamics. Events that bring industry professionals together to exchange knowledge and discuss these developments play a crucial role in driving progress.

From 2–4 March 2026, enamel industry professionals gathered in Wernigerode, Germany, for the DEV Email-Shop Conference, organised by Deutscher Email Verband (DEV). The event provided a valuable platform for experts from across the enamel value chain to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging challenges, and explore technological developments shaping the future of the industry.

PEMCO International was proud to contribute to the programme, with a presentation delivered by Johan Strubbe, who shared insights into the current state of the enamel sector and the evolving landscape for enamel producers and enamellers.

The presentation highlighted the increasing complexity of enamel production, with rising energy prices, volatile raw material markets, and stricter environmental requirements continuing to shape the operating environment. However, it is the technological innovation that remains a key focus for the industry. Developments in electrostatic powder coating systems and advances in furnace technology are improving efficiency while helping manufacturers respond to sustainability challenges.

Regulatory developments were also a major topic of discussion, particularly new European Union guidelines affecting hot water tanks that are scheduled to come into force from 31st December 2026. These regulations introduce new material and testing considerations that will require coordinated efforts across the whole of the enamel industry to ensure compliance.

Encouragingly, the conference also highlighted developments in industry collaboration. SPPE (Stowarzyszenie Polskiego Przemysłu Emalierskiego) successfully held its first conference in 2025, reflecting the growing importance of knowledge exchange and cooperation within the sector. Strengthening collaboration between European enamel associations, particularly through initiatives involving the European Enamel Authority (EEA), could support training, industry dialogue, and engagement with EU institutions.

As the enamel industry continues to navigate technological, regulatory, and market developments, collaboration and knowledge sharing remain essential. Events such as this provide an important forum for bringing together producers, equipment suppliers, and enamelling specialists to collectively address the challenges and opportunities ahead.
